“Actress/Comedienne Kim Coles to Host Full Figured Fashion Week in New York City, Making History and Spearheading a Global Movement”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

June 17, 2009

Fashion Week has grown into a prestigious event recognized worldwide for its success in presenting stunning couture fashion shows in upscale venues. For the first time in history, a partnership of independent fashion designers, retailers, event producers, models and plus industry businesses, will join forces to bring the fashion week experience to the curvy consumer. Full Figured Fashion Week (FFFWeek) will proudly launch in New York City, June 25-27, 2009.
In America alone, there are 40 million women over size 14, spending $25 billion a year on clothing, or a quarter of all clothing sales, according to American Demographics. So, why isn’t there a Fashion Week event dedicated to showcasing fashions available to the curvy consumer? There wasn’t...until NOW!

Produced by DeVoe Signature Events, a special events and management company, specializing in events for plus size consumers for over 10 years, the organizers of FFFWeek are very excited about creating an event that will not only showcase plus size designs, talented designers, retailers, local boutiques and “real size” models, but it is hoped that the event will also increase economic development in the area of plus size fashion design, clothing merchandising and plus modeling.

The ancillary events for FFFWeek will create even more networking opportunities for designers, boutiques and businesses as this highly anticipated three-day fashion extravaganza will debut before an audience of over 1500+ plus size fashion enthusiasts, style mavens, models, boutiques, vendors and the media, while providing an inaugural showcase of talented designers, models, stylists and plus industry businesses that specialize in the needs of the plus size consumer. Organizers of the event have selected Purses And Pockets With A Purpose as their non-profit partner. The opening runway event on June 25th at Club Blvd in Soho will be dedicated to the mission and fundraising efforts of this organization.

Actress & comedienne, Kim Coles, will host the finale runway event, which will be held at 7:00 PM on Saturday, June 27th at the Prince George Ballroom in NYC and will feature the collections of high-end plus size fashion boutiques, retail stores, local and out of state independent designers.

Motivation for the Week

Last week, my sister, niece and nephew came over to my parents house...and literally performed this song and the dancing! LOL!! I had never heard the song before until they came over, now I hear it everywhere!

I was a little sluggish this morning, until Boom Boom Pow was playing in the office this morning and it helped me get my day started...hopefully it does the same for you!!!

Have a Fabulous Week Everyone!!!

A Litte More Personal...

For a while now I have been trying to figure out how I can add more depth to my blog. While brainstorming ideas, I came up with the idea blogging about personal issues of being a plus size woman.

Below is my first personal blog...

Throughout my life I have always been a curvy girl. I was always bigger than most of my friends; it wasn't until I was in college that I really started to embrace my curves. I joined Myspace and began to network with women all over the country that were involved in plus modeling and events that catered to plus size women. I found magazines for plus size women and so much more! I soon realized there are women all over the world that deal with the same body issues that I have dealt with all my life. This is when I adopted the Dove motto "Love the Skin Your In."

A few nights ago I was having a conversation with my boyfriend, and I asked him what attracted him to me. His response was "your self confidence". My boyfriend and I have gone to church all our lives together but had only interacted in some small talk here and there. We became friends on Facebook and the relationship grew from there. The first conversation was sparked because he read my blog, and he sent me a message because he liked what he read. As time went on he told me that he was attracted to how confident I was as a curvy woman (he didn't say 'curvy' but I got it...LOL). I found this very interesting, not to mention flattering. I never would've expected someone to say that about me! DEFINITELY a confidence booster : )

As I stated earlier, accepting my size has always been a struggle of mine, but I am truly learning to love every inch of my curves! Who knew that MY CONFIDENCE (what I had lacked for so long) would have been what attracted the man of my dreams to me! I can't put into words how good that makes me feel.

So the moral of the story is, learn to love you no matter what shape or size.
No one can love you until you've learned to love yourself FIRST : )

Queen Latifah graces the Cover of Essence Magazine for July 2009

Queen Latifah is on the cover of Essence Magazine, July 2009 Issue. Unlike any other interviews you have read about Queen Latifah, this interview is a special one because the Queen opens up about her past.
In the article with Essence Magazine, Queen Latifah talks about being a victim of abuse.
“I never told anybody; I just buried it as deeply as I could and kept people at an arm’s distance. I never really let a person get too close to me. I could have been married years ago, but I had a commitment issues."
“I had to get it off my chest. My mother felt terrible. She was kind of a country girl, so she wasn’t up on how slick people could be. When I told my dad, he said nothing.”

“I was a kid, and I had no power or control over the situation. I really wish I’d had the strength and the knowledge to say something sooner, because I always wondered, did he do that to someone else? But I accept that the time for action has come and gone.”
This had to be really hard to open up to the public about these issues, so I commend Queen Latifah and hopefully she is an inspiration to someone else that may have experienced or is experiencing the same thing.
Please stop by magazine stands to pick up the July Issue!

Plus sizes – Fashion sufferers!

After reading an article on The Insiders Website, I became very disgusted with retailers in America. Due to the economic recession, fashion options for plus size Americans are getting fewer by the day. Well-known brands including Ellen Tracy and Ann Taylor have eliminated or downsized production. Department stores like Bloomingdale’s have decreased space for the collections or even dropped them. I think this is horrible. Taking into consideration the fact an average American woman weighs 164 pounds and is a size 14, there are so many customers abandoned by retailers. Eventually the average American woman won’t be able to shop in national retailers, due to the lack of offering plus sizes.

Some national retail chains have taken the plus size lines out of the store, and only offer them online. Ann Taylor, Banana Republic and Old Navy have moved their larger sizes to e-commerce only. Saks still offers six plus-size brands in its stores but suggests more than 20 on its Web site. I like shopping online, however, I really like shopping in the store because I can try the items on. And what about last minute shopping, that cant be done online! This topic makes me furious! I guess since I'm not between the size of 0-12 I don't deserve to shop in the store!

A Little Late...

Ok so I know I am a little late, however, I was stunned by this interview of Jennifer Hudson and Matt Lauer on the Today Show (May 18, 2009)...VERY UNPROFESSIONAL MATT!!!!

The Fashion Show

Bravo's "The Fashion Show," next episode is to dress “Real Women” with real curves. In this challenge, airing June 4th, the designers are tasked to reveal their attention to detail, then work with padding and body-enhancing fabrics.
While watching the previews I become irritated as I watch two girls complaining about their models’ “43 and 45 inch ass.” Seriously, when did designing for a size 16/18 and higher become that hard of a task to complete, causing one to break down and cry?

Shape Wear...

Above is the picture of the Miraclesuit "Shape with an Edge" Extra-Firm Control High-Waist Thigh Slimmer. I saw this Miraclesuit on a blog I read frequently, so I was debating on whether I should buy it or not, finally I saw it on Macy's website and I read the reviews and I was sold! I purchased this Miraclesuit for $40 from Macy's, and it has been my best friend! LOL! It works great; it holds everything in place, and doesn't roll down like a lot of the shape wear does. I ordered it in an XL and it fits true to size, I purchased it in black, however, I will soon be purchasing it in Nude.
If you are looking for comfortable shape wear, try the Miraclesuit Extra-Firm Control High-Waist Thigh Slimmer.
